Authors Guidelines

RESEARCH MANUSCRIPT SUBMISSION GUIDELINES

Cover Letter: A cover letter should be submitted to the editor that states the following:

(1) Title of the Manuscript

(2) Contributions that were made by each author.The cover letter must state: The author(s) agree that the manuscript: (1) has not simultaneously been submitted to another journal, and (2) is not under consideration by another journal.

The JHET is using APA 6th edition until the end of 2020. Beginning in January of 2021, the JHET will be using APA 7th edition.

Title Page #1: Title of the manuscript. Followed by the names, credentials, affiliations, mailing, telephone numbers, and email addresses for all authors. The authors are to be listed in the order of their contributions to the manuscript.

Title Page #2 (no authors)

Abstract: The abstract should not exceed 350 words. The following sections are required in the abstract:

  1. Purpose
  2. Methods
  3. Results
  4. Conclusions
  5. Recommendations

*Please note that the abstract does not contain abbreviations or references, per APA.

Key Words: include 3-5 key words

Manuscript: The following segments and order are to be used in the development of the manuscript.

  1. Introduction
  2. Purpose
  3. Methods
  4. Institutional Review Board (IRB) approval must be documented.
  5. Informed consent: Informed consent must be documented.
  6. Results
  7. Conclusions
  8. Recommendations
  9. References
  10. Tables/Figures

Word Processing: MS Word 2010 or newer is to be used to create the manuscript. And the manuscript is to be submitted to the JHET in MS Word 2010 or newer. The JHET will not convert a document file that is in a different format other than MS Word.

Editing and Proofreading: All authors are responsible for editing and proofreading the manuscript before submission. Do not submit a manuscript that has track changes, comment boxes, or other types of MS Word 2010 or newer editing and proofreading features. It is the author(s) responsibility to submit a manuscript that is free of these features.

Page proofs: The corresponding author will receive a copy edit of the manuscript that is accepted for publication. The JHET only communicates with the corresponding author. It is the corresponding author’s responsibility to communicate with their co-authors.

The corresponding author is responsible for forwarding the copy edit to any other co-authors. The corresponding author has 72 hours to review the copy edit for any errors or changes that need to be made before the editor-in-chief posts the final manuscript to the JHET website.

Miscellaneous: The editor-in-chief, and managing editors reserve the right to immediately reject a manuscript that does not meet the submission criteria, and if any of the guidelines were not followed.

Length: Length of the manuscript should not exceed 30 pages, including tables, figures, and references. Manuscripts longer than 30 pages should be accompanied with a cover letter explaining the rationale for the longer paper.

APA Format: All manuscripts must be written and submitted in APA format, the only exceptions are listed below:

  • Font and font size: Arial and 10 point font.
  • Justification: Left justify throughout the manuscript.
  • Spacing: Double space throughout the manuscript.
  • Numbering: Line numbers must be set to begin with the title page.
  • Page numbers: Page numbering begins with the second title page that is without author(s) information. Page numbers must be in the lower right corner.
  • Headers/footers: Running headers or footers are not allowed in the manuscript.
  • Headings: Headings are not indented. Use the following APA head types starting with manuscript itself (i.e. the manuscript title does not begin the level of headings).

LEVEL 1: UPPER CASE AND BOLDED

Level 2: Upper and lower case and bolded

Level 3: Upper and lower case and underlined

Level 4: Upper and lower case, bolded, and underlined.

Level 5: Upper and lower case, italics, and underlined.

Paragraphs: Indent each paragraph.

Tables, Figures, Pictures: Use the MS Word Table Function to create tables. Do not create a table using MS Excel or the text box function in MS Word. Every effort by the author(s) must be made to have the Tables and Figures fit to within the 8.5 inch width of a paper (portrait width). If it is not possible, then the authors will have a $25.00 charge assessed due to the special page proof costs.

All tables will be placed at the end of a manuscript so within a manuscript, direct the reader to the table by using a statement (See Table 1).Tables and Figures should not exceed 6 in total. Pictures, if applicable, are to be submitted in jpeg format.

References: The JHET is using the APA for its references. References should not exceed 40 separate references. EndNotes and automatic referencing systems are not to be used in manuscripts submitted for review to the JHET.

Language: Non-sexist language should be used throughout the manuscript.

Authors hold the copyright without restrictions for their content published in the Journal of Health Education Teaching. Authors retain publishing rights without restrictions for their content published in the Journal of Health Education Teaching.

This is an open access journal which means that all content is freely available without charge to the user or his/her institution. Users are allowed to read, download, copy, distribute, print, search, or link to the full texts of the articles, or use them for any other lawful purpose, without asking prior permission from the publisher or the author. This is in accordance with the BOAI definition of open access.

TEACHING IDEAS SUBMISSION GUIDELINES

  1. Teaching ideas are not the primary purpose of the JHET. Classroom teaching ideas submitted to the JHET must be tested and refined. If the teaching technique is not tested and refined, please submit your idea to one of the many other journals that publish untested teaching ideas.
  2. Follow all of the above guidelines regarding style, font, APA, etc.
  3. Cover letter stating which area your teaching idea is applicable to (HETE, Community Health, Public Health, or Personal Health).
  4. Title Page with author(s) information.
  5. Title Page with no author information and the abstract.
  6. Abstract: 100 words or less. The teaching idea abstract must be in the following format: Purpose, Methods, Conclusions, Key Words (3-5 key words).
  7. Teaching Ideas Manuscript must be in the following outline and use these headings:
    • Introduction
    • Teaching Method
    • Teaching Procedures
    • Assessment Procedures and Evaluation Rubric
    • Results
    • Discussion
    • References
    • Tables, Figures, Pictures

Page Proof Processing Charges

The JHET is an open access journal and as such has to charge authors for the making of their page proofs so that all pages of the JHET are visually identical.

If your manuscript is accepted for publication, there is a charge for the page proof service. We charge exactly what the page proof service charges the JHET, we do not believe in charging authors more than the actual costs. The charges are $10.00 per page.

To pay for these page proofs, go to the Submission tab. Payment is made through PayPal with the link found under the submissions tab.

The JHET does not waiver the page proof processing charges for authors from developing countries.

Submission Procedures

When submitting to the JHET, the author(s) agree that the manuscript: (1) has not simultaneously been submitted to another journal, and (2) is not under consideration by another journal.

To be published by the JHET, a manuscript must meet the following criteria:

  1. Importance: the paper must promote the teaching of the various health educations.
  2. Relevancy: the paper must be relevant to teaching of health education.
  3. Methodology: all research studies must have clearly described designs, methodology, valid and reliable findings, and conclusions.
